Use of Medical Cannabis Surges in the United Kingdom

The use of medical cannabis in the United Kingdom continues to expand, with some noteworthy changes that are catching the attention of patients and experts. According to the Cañamo portal, a report from Prohibition Partners shows that between 2022 and 2024, the volume of medical cannabis flowers dispensed in the country increased from about 2,700 kg to 9,800 kg, a growth of 262% in just two years.

Although the medicinal use of the plant has been allowed in the United Kingdom since 2018, the most common access still occurs through private clinics, rather than the National Health Service (NHS). The lack of a centralized data system also makes it difficult to have a complete overview of the sector.

Stronger Products and High Demand

One of the most striking changes in the British market is the increase in potency of prescribed products. According to the Cañamo portal, in 2022, most medical cannabis flowers had a THC content between 18% and 22%. In 2024, almost a third of the products exceeded 22% THC, and the first months of 2025 show that this share may be approaching half of the total prescriptions.

This trend reflects a tendency of patients and prescribers to seek more potent products, often associated with perceived therapeutic effects as more effective. However, experts emphasize the importance of clearer regulation and standardized data, both for patients and for public policies.

The emerging scenario is one of a sector in full transformation: robust growth, products with higher THC content, and a private market leading access to treatments, even with remaining challenges of regulation and data standardization.
