The United States Department of Defense announced that it will start testing military personnel for the psychedelic substance psilocybin, found in mushrooms containing psilocin. The measure, which goes into effect on October 1, is part of the drug demand reduction program and aims to maintain the safety and readiness of the armed forces.

A memorandum from the Department of Defense (DOD), dated August 18, states that psilocin will be added to the drug testing panel. According to the document, the decision is based on the “risk of impairment and subsequent deterioration of safety, military fitness, readiness, good order, and discipline.”

The memorandum also details that the tests will prioritize samples collected with probable cause, consent, or command, and may also include random collections and special requests.

Zero Tolerance Policy and Legal Challenges

The DOD maintains a zero tolerance policy for drugs, including cannabis and hemp-derived products, such as CBD and delta-8 THC. Recent legal proceedings and changes in state marijuana laws have raised questions about the use of psychedelic substances and cannabinoids by military personnel.

Authorities emphasize that the testing program is part of an ongoing effort to prevent drug misuse but will also coexist with Congress-approved pilot programs for psychedelic therapy for military personnel and veterans.

Context and Impacts

In recent years, the armed forces have reinforced warnings about the use of cannabis-based products, including food and cosmetics with CBD. A history of restrictive policies and specific instructions from the different branches - Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Army, shows concern for safety, even in the face of the growing legalization of marijuana in several states.
