USP's FCF hosts the 1st Brazilian Academic Congress on Medical Cannabis

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Universidade de São Paulo (FCF / USP) has opened registrations for the first edition of the Brazilian Academic Congress on Medical Cannabis (1st CABCANN-FCF / USP). The event will take place on November 5 and 6, 2026, at the Istvan Jancsó Auditorium on the Butantã campus in São Paulo.

Considered an unprecedented initiative by FCF / USP, the congress will focus on the medical Cannabis value chain from the perspective of pharmaceutical sciences. The schedule comes during a time of shifts in the Brazilian regulatory landscape, following the entry into force, on August 4, of the set of resolutions by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) establishing new rules for the cultivation, research, manufacturing, and commercialization of Cannabis products for medicinal and scientific purposes.

Themed “From cultivation to health innovation: science, innovation, development, and regulation to drive scientific, technological, and social progress”, the 1st CABCANN-FCF/USP will feature conferences, panels, roundtables, lectures, and four simultaneous short courses.

The program brings together researchers and professionals from institutions such as USP, Unicamp, Unesp, Unifesp, and Anvisa, alongside representatives from scientific associations, trade organizations, and companies connected to the medical Cannabis supply chain.

Academia and the productive sector

Conceived by Professor Dr. Paulo Chanel Deodato de Freitas, professor at FCF/USP and president of the congress, the event aims to bring scientific output closer to the demands of the sector and society.

“CABCANN-FCF/USP aims to be the bridge between knowledge produced in academia and its application in society, connecting researchers, healthcare professionals, regulatory agencies, and the productive sector committed to responsible innovation and the sustainable development of the medical Cannabis value chain,” states Paulo Chanel Deodato de Freitas.

According to the organizers, the goal is to foster a multidisciplinary discussion covering the different links in the chain, including cultivation, scientific research, technological development, manufacturing, regulation, and pharmaceutical care.

The congress also takes place following the implementation of Anvisa's new regulatory framework, which consolidates regulations regarding controlled substances, scientific research, domestic cultivation for medicinal purposes, industrial manufacturing, and the role of patient associations.

Institutional support

The first edition of CABCANN-FCF/USP has the institutional support of universities, regulatory agencies, scientific associations, and entities linked to the medical Cannabis chain.

Among the institutions are Anvisa, Unesp, Unicamp, Unifesp, the Regional Pharmacy Council of São Paulo (CRF/SP), the Institute for Technological Research (IPT), USP's Provost Office for Culture and University Extension (PRCEU-USP), the Culture and Extension Committee of FCF/USP (CCEx-FCF/USP), BCQ-USP, ABIFINA, ABIFISA, ABIQUIFI, SBFgnosia, and Anfarmag.

Partner institutions also include Flor da Vida, Maria Flor, ACCURA, and APEPI.

The event is hosted by the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), with academic coordination by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of USP and promotion by the Pharmaceutical Research Institute Foundation (FIPFARMA). Instituto Racine provides scientific support, and event organization is managed by Álvara Eventos.
