What happens when marijuana and psychedelics are used together?

A study conducted by researchers from the Imperial College London revealed that the combined consumption of marijuana and psychedelics intensifies the mystical experience.

As reported by Marijuana Moment, scientists interviewed 321 people online who described their trips with psychedelics and cannabis. Thus, the volunteers completed surveys seven days before and one day after a “planned experience with a serotonergic psychedelic”.

Likewise, the research showed that the more marijuana a person consumes, the more intense the psychedelic effect.

However, the research also collected the “challenging” aspects of the psychedelic experience, such as feelings of fear, pain, and madness.

“People who consumed lower doses of cannabis along with the substances had fewer challenging experiences compared to people who did not consume marijuana, but those who consumed high doses of cannabis had more challenges,” states the study published in the specialized journal Psychopharmacology.

As they stand, the survey results have important implications for education and harm reduction. Additionally, the work provides important data for the therapeutic use of the two substances together.

“Future controlled research is needed to better assess the causal interactions between cannabis and psychedelics in relation to acute and lasting psychological effects. Overall, this study provided a first quantitative insight into the modulation of the subjective psychedelic effects of cannabis,” they concluded.
