For decades, cannabis has been the subject of distorted information, from supposed drastic behavior changes to the idea that it would be possible to die from excessive consumption. But is cannabis overdose actually possible? Science says no.
Every substance has a point at which the dose can become toxic. In 1988, a report from the DEA revealed that, according to Judge Francis L. Young, the lethal dose of cannabis would be practically impossible to reach, requiring the consumption of about 680 kg of the plant — equivalent to 20,000 to 40,000 0.9-gram cigarettes — in just 15 minutes.
Cannabis Overdose: No Deaths Recorded
There are no records of deaths directly caused by cannabis. However, irresponsible use can be dangerous. Driving, operating machinery, or engaging in risky activities under the influence of the substance can result in fatal accidents.
Extra caution should be taken with cannabis edibles, as dosing is more difficult to control with continuous consumption, increasing the chance of intense effects.
When Consumption Goes Wrong
Cannabis can cause adverse effects when used excessively, such as heart and blood pressure changes, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, confusion, paranoia, and even hallucinations.
Conditions like allergies and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (persistent vomiting) have also been reported, although still poorly understood.
Dependency is Possible
Cannabis use disorder affects about 10% of users, according to studies. Signs include anxiety, irritability, insomnia, and impairments in social or professional life without consumption. Although it does not compare to the impact of more severe chemical dependencies, irresponsible use without medical guidance can compromise quality of life.
Responsible Use is Key
Cannabis is considered without a record of causing death, just this week President Donald Trump confirmed this information. Understanding the effects, respecting limits, and avoiding combinations with other substances are essential steps to reduce risks and ensure a safer relationship with the plant.
