Anvisa releases report with scientific studies received on medical cannabis cultivation
The document systematizes contributions submitted by national and international researchers and institutions during a public call aimed at gathering evidence on Cannabis sativa L. for medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes

The Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) published the “Systematization Report of Public Call Notice No. 23 – Call for Papers on Cannabis Cultivation for Medicinal and/or Pharmaceutical Purposes”. The document gathers and organizes scientific contributions received by the agency during the initiative that sought to assemble evidence on the cultivation of the plant in Brazil.
The public call was opened on November 13, 2025, and invited national and international researchers and institutions to submit previously published scientific works related to the cultivation of Cannabis sativa L. for medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes. The initiative received systematic literature reviews, scientific articles, and reports of practical or laboratory experiences related to the topic.
According to Anvisa, the received publications were systematized considering thematic relevance and consistency with the scope defined in the notice. The report presents the organization of the contributions submitted during the call and gathers information on the participating scientific works.
The initiative was part of the regulatory development process conducted by the agency for medical cannabis cultivation in the country. At the opening of the call, Anvisa informed that the goal was to gather scientific evidence available in scientific journals and repositories to assist in drafting a proposed regulation on the cultivation of the plant in Brazil.
The report also contextualizes the different aspects related to the cultivation of Cannabis sativa L., assembling studies and experiences related to technical issues involved in the plant's production chain. Among the content considered are scientific research and reports based on practical or laboratory activities submitted by the participants of the notice.
The publication of the document comes after Anvisa made progress in establishing the regulatory framework related to medical cannabis. In 2026, the agency published regulatory acts concerning the sector, including rules on cannabis products for medicinal use and experimental regulatory mechanisms aimed at generating evidence.
