On Thursday (03), the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), received in his office the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira, to discuss issues related to medical cannabis.

During the conversation, Teixeira emphasized the importance of putting the Bill 399/2015 to a vote, which proposes the regulation of the commercialization of medications with extracts, substrates, or parts of the Cannabis sativa plant in their formulation.

Teixeira and Motta made a commitment: in May, the President of the Chamber is expected to receive representatives from Brazilian associations linked to medical cannabis, focusing on the production and access to treatments derived from the plant.

"The production of phytotherapeutics by family agriculture is one of the matters of our ministry," said Minister Paulo Teixeira on his social media.

Also on Thursday, the minister met with the Governor of Sergipe, Fábio Mitidieri - author of PL 399, when he served as a federal deputy. Both are advocates for the cannabis agenda.

In the meeting, they discussed the impacts of recent changes to the rules of the Agricultural Activity Guarantee Program (Proagro), especially for family agriculture in the state of Sergipe and throughout the Northeast region.

More Cannabis Events

As part of his cannabis agenda, Teixeira participated the day before in an event at the Metalworkers' Union of ABC, in São Bernardo do Campo (SP). The meeting discussed the importance of medical cannabis in the treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

On that occasion, a partnership was established between the union and the Therapeutic Association Flor da Vida, aimed at expanding access for members to cannabis treatment and offering new options for care and quality of life.
