Penguin Treated with Cannabis Derivatives, Music, and Acupuncture for Spinal Injury Recovery

At the Albatroz Institute, located in Araruama, in the Lagos Region of Rio de Janeiro, a Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is undergoing an unconventional yet promising treatment for a spinal edema. The condition left the animal hunched and impaired in its mobility. To alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, the veterinarians in charge incorporated the use of cannabis derivatives, along with other integrative therapies such as laser therapy, acupuncture, and neural therapy, in the animal's treatment.

The penguin was rescued by the Beach Monitoring Project team after being found stranded in Arraial do Cabo. Initial examinations revealed an edema and a decrease in intervertebral space, which affected its posture and caused discomfort. Although treatment began with traditional anti-inflammatories, the limited response led the veterinarians to adopt a more holistic approach.

In addition to the cannabinoids, which help control pain and inflammation, the animal has been undergoing sessions of acupuncture and laser therapy, practices aimed at stimulating the body's natural recovery and minimizing the use of conventional medications. To complement the therapeutic environment, the penguin is also exposed to relaxing music, featuring songs by the artist Enya, creating a serene atmosphere conducive to recovery.

“This combination of integrative therapies demonstrates our commitment to practices that prioritize animal welfare, seeking alternatives that reduce the use of aggressive medications,” says the institute's veterinarian, Daphne Wrobel, in an interview with Globo. The innovative treatment has shown promising results, allowing the penguin to gradually regain its mobility.
