In the Czech Republic, medical cannabis is already being viewed differently. A recent survey showed that the majority of the population supports the use of the plant under medical prescription, signaling a shift in perception that combines care, science, and responsibility. According to the Cañamo portal, the study reveals that 71% of Czechs believe in the therapeutic potential of cannabis, a data point that resonates beyond European borders.
The survey was conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health of the Czech Republic (NUDZ) and involved 1,809 participants from different age groups. The data shows that, although society still has reservations about recreational use, there is a clear willingness to recognize the plant's effectiveness in clinical contexts.
Support is growing, but recreational use still divides opinions
According to the Cañamo portal, only 45% of respondents support the regulation of cannabis for adult use, without therapeutic purpose. Among those who support medicinal consumption, the approval is almost unanimous.
The survey also revealed concerns about possible social impacts of broader legalization. Around 62% of respondents believe that full legalization could increase the number of users, while 47% fear overload for public security agencies. On the other hand, only 23% see that regulation would have an immediate positive impact.
These numbers reveal a country divided between the advancement of scientific information and the cultural barriers that still surround the topic. For many Czechs, medicinal use is already understood as a legitimate health tool, but adult use is still surrounded by doubts and fears.
Youthful generations show greater openness to the topic
The study also highlighted an important generational difference: among young people aged 15 to 24, there is greater tolerance and curiosity about the topic. Among the older population, especially those over 65, a more cautious view prevails, associating consumption with dependency and social risk.

Also according to the Cañamo portal, when compared to alcohol, a good portion of respondents consider cannabis to be less dangerous or equivalent, a sign that risk perception is gradually changing, driven by information and access to treatments that prove its therapeutic effects.
The Czech scenario, therefore, reflects an ongoing process also seen in other parts of the world: the recognition that cannabis can be, above all, an ally in health care. And, as the statistics show, acceptance grows as science and social dialogue advance hand in hand.
