RS establishes Parliamentary Front for the Sustainability of Industrial Hemp

The Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul was the stage for the establishment of the Parliamentary Front for the Sustainability of Industrial Hemp this Wednesday (27). Endorsed by State Deputy Edivilson Brum and 18 other parliamentarians, the initiative aims to position the state as a national reference in the use and regulation of this culture, recognized for its high economic, environmental, and social potential.

In 2021, RS contributed 12.7% of the total Gross Value Added of Brazilian agriculture, exceeding R$ 75 million, reaching the second position in the national ranking, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Deputy Edivilson Brum highlighted that the main objective of the Parliamentary Front will be to ensure legal certainty for producers, encourage scientific research, and attract investments. "Industrial hemp represents a strategic opportunity to transform our economy, generate jobs, and strengthen agriculture. This Front will be a space for dialogue and coordination to promote public policies that realize this potential in Rio Grande do Sul," said the parliamentarian.

Economic and environmental potential of industrial hemp

Hemp is a variety of cannabis sativa with THC concentrations below 0.3%, incapable of producing psychoactive effects. With applications in textile, energy, pharmaceutical, construction, and biofuel sectors, the culture emerges as a sustainable alternative that can diversify the state's economic matrix.

During his speech, the deputy mentioned the recent climate crisis experienced in the state. He also highlighted the efficiency of hemp in carbon sequestration and in replacing polluting raw materials, becoming an essential ally in the search for ecological and socially responsible solutions.
