With an optimistic view of the future of cannabis in Brazil, Fernando Badauí, lead singer of the band CPM 22 and activist for the cause, argues that the "bubble has burst". During the 4th edition of the Medical Cannabis Fair, which starting in 2026 will be renamed Cannabis Fair, the musician celebrated the market's progress and criticized the historical roots of prohibition.

For Badauí, the growth of the medical cannabis market in the country is a clear sign of a shift in mentality, even in a "conservative" scenario. "It's great to see where cannabis is heading and making strides worldwide," he said.

The artist's perception is supported by sector data. Projections from the Kaya Mind consultancy indicate that the cannabis market in Brazil generated R$ 853 million in 2024 and could reach R$ 1 billion by the end of 2025, with the potential to serve up to 7 million patients.

The historical roots of cannabis prohibition

The singer emphasized the importance of demystifying the image of the plant, historically associated with criminality. "What caused all this was the prohibition, right? A completely racial and xenophobic issue in the United States in the 1930s," he commented.

Badauí's statement echoes studies indicating that cannabis criminalization was driven by prejudice against Mexican immigrants and the association of the plant with minorities.

Badauí also emphasizes the importance of awareness for safe cannabis use, whether for medicinal or recreational purposes. "You have to know what you're taking," he warned, mentioning the variety of cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBN, and CBG.

For him, education is the way for people to make informed choices and enjoy the benefits of the plant, which, in his view, is a "natural thing, from the earth".

An appeal for cannabis activism

Finally, the musician appeals to cannabis users to abandon the fear of exposure. "Today, the shame is using cannabis, whether for any purpose, and thinking you still have to hide," he stated.

"Show your face, we need everyone on our side to further demonstrate the size of this scene. Don't hide, man. It's a matter of pride to defend cannabis, not shame," he concluded.
