In the last ten years, scientific interest in cannabis has grown exponentially, with 1,710 studies published in the PubMed journal, focused on cannabis and cannabidiol. In just the first semester of 2024, over 120 research studies on the subject were released, according to the Medicinal Cannabis Yearbook. This growth not only reflects the evolution of knowledge about the plant but also reveals its potential as an innovation in the field of medicine.
Dr. Paulo Jordão, a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), highlights the innovations capable of truly transforming the market, such as those that, in addition to being promising ideas, successfully consolidate. "What are innovations? They are ideas that come to the market and are successful. There are many ideas that do not move forward. The cannabis market has existed for a long time, being used for centuries. However, the medicinal area has developed recently, with the support of various sciences, such as biology and chemistry."
The intersection between science and innovation is one of the pillars of the Brazilian Medicinal Cannabis Congress. According to Dr. Paulo Jordão, the event goes beyond a simple academic meeting, providing a unique space to connect research, products, and ideas. "The Congress is where we deposit the most recent knowledge. And how does this apply in practice? All exhibitors with products that are the result of ideas converted into cannabis-based medications. This event manages to bring together products, research, and scientific work in one place," explains the researcher during the 3rd edition of the event, which took place in 2024.

Promising studies in disease treatment
During the Congress, several discoveries were presented, reinforcing the impact of medicinal cannabis. Pharmacist Marissa El Hajje brought an innovative study, entitled "In vitro and in vivo Studies of Induction of Apoptosis in Multiple Myeloma by Cannabis Oil," which demonstrated a 30% higher efficacy in leukemia treatment compared to conventional therapies.
Another highlight was the research by Matheus Vinicius Ferreira, who investigated the analgesic potential of cannabigerol (CBG) in diabetic rats, opening up new therapeutic perspectives.
Regulation of medicinal cannabis in Brazil
In addition to scientific advances, the Congress also fostered discussions on the regulation of the medicinal cannabis market in Brazil. Paulo Jordão emphasized the need for government action: "The State cannot remain silent, as there is already cannabis consumption in Brazil, cannabis-based medications are in use, and various associations have production licenses. Regulations for importation are already in effect in several cities and states," says Paulo, who was a speaker in the Agro and Tech Cannabis module, during the second day of the event.
He also stresses that the Congress is an opportunity for doctors, patients, and healthcare professionals to delve into new scientific knowledge and understand how this market functions. "The public sector needs to view these events as places for knowledge transfer. The cannabis market is already a reality, with various competitors showcasing the advantages of their products."
