The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this week that he is "strongly considering" the reclassification of cannabis at the federal level, a statement that has reignited expectations of a possible change in American policy regarding the plant.

Currently, cannabis remains classified under Schedule I of federal law, the most restrictive category, reserved for substances deemed to have no accepted medical use. Nevertheless, dozens of states already allow for medicinal use and, in some cases, recreational use.

The proposal under consideration involves moving marijuana to Schedule III, where drugs with recognized medical use and lower potential for dependence are listed. The measure would not imply federal legalization, but could reduce barriers to scientific research, facilitate access for the cannabis sector to the financial system, and decrease federal penalties in states where use is already legalized.

According to Marijuana Moment, Trump's statements have boosted shares of companies in the sector and expanded public debate. Surveys indicate that some consumers see the possible reclassification as a significant step, although there is still skepticism about the fulfillment of the promise.

As of now, there is no official confirmation of a decree or final decision. If it progresses, the process should involve assessments by the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
