Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and journalist Mark Halperin presented divergent opinions on the possibility of cannabis being legalized at the federal level during the presidency of United States President Donald Trump.

The topic arose during an episode of The Morning Meeting podcast, as the two discussed an executive order signed by the president on Thursday authorizing the use of cryptocurrencies in 401(k) retirement accounts.

Spicer rules out federal cannabis legalization

Spicer, who served in Trump's first term, stated that if someone had told him ten years ago that a 79-year-old Republican president would be "leading the way in cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence," he wouldn't have believed it. He believes these agendas "would have been dominated by Democrats."

Hearing this, Halperin added: "You left out marijuana legalization too," sparking about 30 seconds of cross-talk:

Spicer: "It's not going to happen. It's not going to happen."

Halperin: "Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah."

Spicer: "No, not under this president. No, no, no."

Halperin: "Yes."

Spicer: "He's not going to do it, no."

Campaign promises and uncertainties in the sector

Despite advocating for cannabis reclassification, banking access to the sector, and a state legalization initiative in Florida during the campaign, Trump has not publicly voiced support for federal legalization.
