For some people, however, this experience seems to gain new layers when cannabis enters the scene. Sounds previously unnoticed start to draw attention, lyrics seem to take on new meanings, and the connection with the music becomes more intense.
For a long time, these perceptions were limited to user reports. Now, science is beginning to investigate why this combination sparks so much interest and what mechanisms may be involved in this experience.
A new study published in the scientific journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research specifically investigated this relationship between cannabis and music, analyzing how the plant can influence sound perception, mood regulation, and emotional responses during musical listening.
According to the researchers, although music and cannabis have already demonstrated, separately, significant impacts on well-being, the interaction between the two had been little explored in the scientific literature.
To address this question, the researchers administered an online questionnaire consisting of 176 questions to 122 cannabis users. The survey gathered information about participants' profiles, consumption patterns, musical habits, emotional responsiveness, and perceived changes in the musical experience after using the plant.
The results showed that most participants evaluated the combination of cannabis and music positively. Among the most reported benefits were:

increased sense of connection during musical listening
Additionally, many stated that they turned to music more frequently after consuming cannabis, even during everyday activities, making the soundtrack part of the sensory experience.
What Happens in the Brain When Listening to Music with Cannabis?
The new results align with previous research conducted by Toronto Metropolitan University, which sought to understand how cannabis modifies the brain's processing of music.
According to another study, previously published and reported by Portal Sechat, the musical experience under the influence of cannabis involves four major dimensions:
The first is the alteration of cognitive processes, leading many people to reinterpret lyrics, melodies, and meanings of songs.
The second relates to changes in auditory perception, which can range from increased sensitivity to sounds to episodes of sensory overload.
The third involves greater emotional openness and the ability to regulate feelings related to cannabis and music.
The fourth pertains to the sensation of bodily immersion, where some people describe a deep connection with the rhythm, while others report experiences of dissociation or feeling "out of body".
The researchers also observed that many participants reported noticing musical details that would typically go unnoticed. Instruments, harmonies, changes in rhythm, and nuances of recordings were described as more evident during the experience with cannabis.
In various reports, participants said they felt that their brains could better integrate the different elements of music, making listening more engaging.
Another finding was the increase in what is called musical absorption, a psychological state characterized by intense attention and complete immersion in the auditory experience.
In the Canadian study, participants reported greater auditory sensitivity and significantly higher levels of this absorption when comparing moments under the influence of cannabis with periods of sobriety.
Relaxation, Mood, and Well-Being
The new survey also investigated how cannabis and music can influence aspects related to well-being. Many participants reported using cannabis as an alternative or complement to cope with symptoms such as anxiety, pain, and sleep disturbances. According to them, music often enhanced the feeling of relaxation and emotional comfort during these experiences.
Despite these reports, the authors emphasize that the data represent subjective perceptions of the participants and do not prove therapeutic efficacy. The study did not compare treatments or assess clinical outcomes, making it necessary for controlled research to investigate these effects more thoroughly.
Another important point is that, although many participants reported a more intense musical experience, the researchers did not find significant differences in the overall perception of reward provided by music when comparing moments with and without cannabis.
This result reinforces that the interaction depends on various individual factors, such as context, expectation, musical repertoire, and personal characteristics.
Science Still Seeks to Understand This Connection
The relationship between cannabis and music has also been investigated through neuroimaging studies. In a previously published study, scientists observed that THC modifies the activity of brain regions linked to reward and emotion processing during musical listening.
At the same time, participants reported a greater desire to listen to music and a more intense auditory perception, indicating that the subjective experience does not always exactly accompany the changes observed in the brain. The researchers also identified that the presence of CBD may modulate some of these effects.
For the authors, these results show that the relationship between music, emotion, and the endocannabinoid system is more complex than it seems. The musical experience involves different brain circuits linked to hearing, memory, reward, emotion, and attention, all potentially influenced by cannabinoids.
Although many questions remain unanswered, the research published in recent years helps to build a more consistent picture of a phenomenon described for decades by cannabis consumers.
By gathering data on auditory perception, emotional processing, and musical behavior, the studies suggest that this combination deserves to be explored in greater depth, especially in the context of mental health and well-being.
Still, the researchers themselves emphasize that clinical and experimental studies are needed to understand the mechanisms involved and determine in which situations this interaction can indeed offer therapeutic benefits.
