The global wellness market has surpassed the impacts of the pandemic and reached a new historical milestone. Driven by a growing demand for health, the sector has doubled in size since 2013, reaching $6.8 trillion, according to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI).

Within this scenario of robust expansion, one data point stands out in the North American context. In the US mental wellness market, valued at $125 billion, cannabis-based products have recorded the highest annual growth.

The segment experienced a significant 26% increase over the past five years. Unlike traditional healthcare, focused on disease treatment, wellness is an active pursuit of holistic lifestyles.

It is a multi-sector industry that encompasses everything from healthy eating to preventive medicine. Today, this market surpasses values of giants like IT and tourism, representing about 60% of global health expenditures.

Cannabis-Based Products and the Focus on Mental Health

The GWI report indicates that the mental wellness segment was one of the drivers of this recovery, with an annual expansion of 12.4%. While China ranks second in the ranking, the United States lead by a wide margin thanks to the diversification of therapies.

In addition to cannabis-based products, which led the growth, other categories showed strong increases. Meditation, mindfulness, and sleep technologies also stood out among consumer preferences.

This trend reflects a profound behavioral shift, especially among younger generations. A recent study points to a clear generational divide in cannabinoid use.

While older individuals prioritize physical well-being, Generations Y and Z turn to CBD to manage anxiety and stress. "Young people are not waiting for physical illnesses; they are actively seeking solutions for mental well-being," highlights Andy Papilion, from CBDistillery.

Balanced Use of Cannabis-Based Products

Despite the rapid growth, experts warn that cannabis use in the context of wellness requires responsibility. It is essential that consumption is monitored, avoiding the search for "magic solutions."

"CBD does not replace therapy, it paves the way for change to happen," explains psychologist Maria Klien, in an interview with Portal Sechat. According to the expert, the substance acts by reorganizing the nervous system.

This allows the patient to address their emotional issues. "When a person is chemically organized, they can look at their own life more clearly, build resilience, and expand their internal securities," Klien adds.

The goal is not to numb discomforts but to offer resources to face them. Integrating cannabis-based products with professional guidance enhances therapeutic outcomes.

Future Perspectives for the Sector

Optimism regarding the sector is supported by irreversible demographic trends, such as population aging. The GWI projects that the wellness economy will continue to grow by 7.6% annually, reaching $10 trillion by 2029.

Segments such as real estate focused on wellness and complementary medicine are strong candidates to lead the expansion. The only point of concern was the 1.5% retraction in the workplace wellness market.
