Life for those on the autism spectrum is often marked by noises that the world does not hear. But a new study indicates that, for some adults, cannabis has helped decrease this intensity, offering quick relief in moments of overload.

Immediate reduction after use

The survey, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed data from 111 autistic adults who recorded 5,932 sessions of smoked or vaporized cannabis consumption between 2017 and 2023. After each use, participants evaluated the intensity of symptoms before and after the session.

Symptoms were grouped into four areas:

  • - Sensory sensitivity
  • - Repetitive behaviors
  • - Mental control
  • - Negative affect

The research found an average reduction of 73% in symptom severity. Improvement appeared in 98.33% of sessions, with consistent effects in all observed categories: 97.26% in sensory sensitivity, 99.71% in repetitive behaviors, 97.68% in mental control, and 98.40% in negative affect.

The study also identified that higher doses were associated with more intense reductions in symptoms, especially in repetitive behaviors, mental control, and negative affect. However, the authors emphasize that this is an acute effect, limited to the period immediately after use.

What is already known about cannabis and ASD

Many recent studies involve formulations rich in CBD, especially in children and adolescents. The results often point to:

  • - Reduction in irritability and aggression
  • - Improved sleep
  • - Increased sociability
  • - Advances in communication

Most studies report the absence of serious adverse effects, which has increased the interest of families and healthcare professionals. Nevertheless, researchers emphasize the importance of more clinical trials, with larger groups, placebo control, and extended follow-up.
