Uruguay registers over 102 thousand legal cannabis buyers in 2024
With the launch of the Epsilon variant, the demand for legal cannabis in Uruguay hits record sales
The cannabis market in Uruguay continues to grow in 2024, with over 102 thousand legal buyers registered. Demand was strongly driven by the launch of the Epsilon variant, which contains a higher concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol THC (20%), attracting more consumers in search of a more potent product.
In October 2024, the Epsilon variant hit the market, quickly becoming one of the favorites among Uruguayan consumers. In the two months following its launch, pharmacies distributed 359 kilograms of this new variant — a volume higher than the sales of the already known Alpha and Beta, according to the Institute of Regulation and Control of Cannabis (IRCA).
In December, the IRCA also approved the commercialization of psychoactive cannabis seeds and clones for member clubs. The sale of seeds is expected to begin in March 2025, generating new possibilities for both the local market and other countries.
Currently, 74,583 people are registered to buy cannabis at 40 authorized pharmacies, distributed across 12 departments of the country. Additionally, about 15,796 members of 460 cannabis clubs have doubled their production to meet the growing demand. Finally, 11,597 people have chosen to cultivate the plant in their own homes.

Another variant that stood out in 2024 was Gamma, with 15% THC — higher than the 9% of the Alpha and Beta variants. Throughout the year, Gamma saw a significant increase in sales, totaling 2,254 kilograms sold, compared to 325 kilograms of Alpha and 240 kilograms of Beta.
Legal cannabis production in Uruguay has been steadily increasing. In 2024, the volume allocated to pharmacies reached 3,375 kilograms, compared to 2,767 kilograms in 2023. In cannabis clubs, production more than doubled, jumping from 1,923 kilograms in 2023 to 4,143 kilograms in 2024.
