The use of cannabis in women's health is a "very new" field, with studies concentrated from 2019 onwards, but that "is here to stay". This statement comes from Dr. Mariana Prado, during the Brazilian Medicinal Cannabis Congress 2025.

The gynecologist highlights the breadth of therapeutic application. Cannabis interacts with the female body at different times, not limited to a single pathology or age group. "Cannabis applies to all stages of a woman's life," explains Dr. Prado.

"So, we are talking from adolescence there, with menstrual disorders, PMS, cramps, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, menopausal disorders, libido, insomnia," she details.

The doctor also discusses the possibility of use in pathologies, "especially chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, adenomyosis".

Additional studies reinforce this view. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) interacts directly with female hormones, explaining why the body responds uniquely to cannabinoids.

The cyclicity of use

According to Dr. Mariana Prado, the main difference in cannabinoid treatment in women is the need to understand hormonal fluctuations. A static treatment, with the same dosage throughout the month, may not be ideal.

"I always say that when we think about cannabinoid therapy in the female body, we have to think about this cyclicity," the doctor warns.

She explains that this variation is the basis of many gynecological conditions. "In gynecology, we have to consider that this patient will not always be using the same dose throughout the entire month."

The "Entourage" Effect

In the management of chronic pelvic pain, such as that caused by endometriosis, Dr. Prado explains the preference for full spectrum formulations, which use the whole plant.

"In pain control, logically, we tend to prefer full spectrum oils because of the entourage effect. A synergy, one enhances the effect of the other," she says.

She details the action of the compounds. "CBD has analgesic potential, mainly anti-inflammatory. THC comes in to enhance the effect."

Gynecology also allows for exploring different administration routes. "It can be oral, it can be suppository. Gynecology works with these other formulations."

The cornerstone of cannabis treatment

Despite the benefits, the doctor emphasizes that cannabis is not a magical solution, but part of a comprehensive health approach. lifestyle changes (LSC)", she points out. "We cannot start a cannabinoid treatment without adjusting these other factors as well. Sleep, physical activity, mental health, hydration".

For the treatment to be effective, the patient's participation is essential. "We need her to come along with us, especially by keeping track of her menstrual calendar, understanding herself during the cycle."
