The comedian and streamer Dilera, artistic name of Diego Barbosa, is known for bringing to the screens of humor and social media his experience with Tourette Syndrome, a neurological condition that causes uncontrollable impulses, such as sudden movements and involuntary emission of words, often inappropriate.

In the episode of Deusa Cast - The safe use of cannabinoids in pediatrics, pediatrician Lays Mello, a specialist in endocannabinoid medicine, explains in a clear and didactic way how CBD can be an ally in the treatment of the disease.

"Tourette Syndrome is quite forgotten in this world. But we already have many positive evidences regarding the use of cannabis in these patients. CBD helps to decrease the accelerated synapses in the brain, reducing the rapid impulses that lead to swearing or sudden movements. It relaxes and greatly improves the excessive excitability that characterizes the disease," explains the doctor.

Understanding the impact of the syndrome

Although it often appears in comic situations, such as on television shows and humor channels where Dilera stood out, the condition brings great suffering. "Even though he uses humor as a tool, at other times he has reported biting his own mouth to contain the urge to swear. This type of self-mutilation is a way to deal with something extremely painful, as the patient does not want to act that way, but cannot control it," highlights the doctor.

According to the pediatrician, in addition to communication difficulties, the syndrome can lead to social isolation, relationship problems, anxiety, and depression. "Usually, conventional treatment includes very sedative medications, which make the person apathetic. CBD, on the other hand, does not cause this effect. On the contrary, it helps to stimulate social interaction and restore quality of life to the patient," she adds.

Cannabis as a light in treatment

Lays Mello also emphasizes that cannabis is not a cure, but an alternative that brings significant benefits in cases resistant to traditional therapies. "CBD brings a wonderful light in these cases, especially when we think about quality of life and social inclusion," she concludes.
