Lula appoints new directors for regulatory agencies, including Anvisa

The President emphasized the responsibility of the appointees and reinforced the importance of the agencies for the country's development

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed, on Thursday (28), the appointment of new directors for regulatory agencies. The decree was published in the Official Gazette of the Union on Friday (29).

Among the chosen ones are three directors of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the body responsible for relevant standards for the health sector, including the regulation of cannabis in Brazil, such as RDC 327, currently under review, and RDC 660. In addition to participating in the regulation of cannabis cultivation scheduled for September 29, 2025.

For the Agency, Leandro Pinheiro Safatle was appointed as President-Director of Anvisa, replacing Antônio Barra Torres. To complete the board, Daniela Marreco Cerqueira was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Meiruze Sousa Freitas and Thiago Lopes Cardoso Campos, replacing Alex Machado Campos.

During the ceremony, Lula highlighted the importance of the act for Brazil and congratulated the new directors. “From now on, you are members of regulatory agencies that have to serve the Brazilian people. You now owe the Brazilian people what you have to offer best: your professional competence and knowledge, so that we can fulfill the dream of having a fairer, more modern, productive, and humanistic country,” he declared.

The Senate leader, Davi Alcolumbre, also present at the ceremony, emphasized the directors' mission. “You will have a great mission to help us in the regulatory agencies. May you provide wisdom and discernment to build a society with important organs for the State. And the State needs the action of each of you here.”

The appointments for director positions in regulatory agencies are made by the President of the Republic and forwarded to the Federal Senate, which approved the names on August 19.
