The construction industry is seeking alternatives to reduce its carbon footprint, and hemp emerges as one of the most promising solutions. With the urgent need to replace traditional materials, which are major emitters of carbon dioxide (CO₂), hempcrete stands out as an innovative option. This mixture of industrial hemp fibers, heat, and water not only contributes to sustainable construction but also sequesters carbon, helping to mitigate environmental impacts.

This growing interest in innovations has led the publisher Frontiers, one of the largest academic research platforms in the world, to open a call for submission of scientific articles, with a deadline of January 31, 2025. The goal is to deepen knowledge about hempcrete and expand its use in the construction industry, going beyond insulation applications to explore its potential as a structural support material.

Among the main focuses of the publisher are quantifying and enhancing the physical and mechanical properties of hempcrete, investigating its application in structural panels, and evaluating its performance in different construction components.

“With this research, we aim to advance the understanding and application of hempcrete in sustainable construction, contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions and promoting healthier and more efficient building practices,” stated Frontiers.

 

Potential of Hempcrete

 

Industrial hemp, which grows in less than four months, is already widely used in various sectors—from textile fibers to biofuels—but its use in construction is gaining prominence due to its carbon storage potential.

Known as hempcrete, this material has proven to be a promising technology to revolutionize the construction industry. The construction sector is responsible for about 37% of global CO₂ emissions, and hemp offers excellent thermal insulation, improving the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing greenhouse gas emissions over time. Furthermore, hempcrete continues to absorb carbon throughout its lifespan.

The initiative by Frontiers aims to gather the best studies and innovations to make hempcrete a widely used solution in future projects, transforming it from an alternative material into a viable and sustainable option for the construction industry.
