A new Brazilian narrative review study points out that cannabidiol (CBD), extracted from Cannabis sativa, is becoming a promising alternative in the treatment of various clinical conditions in dogs.

Researchers from the University Center of Lavras, in Minas Gerais, analyzed national and international publications and found scientific evidence that reinforces the therapeutic potential of the compound in conditions such as osteoarthritis, epilepsy, atopic dermatitis, inflammations, and even in the control of cell proliferation in cancer cases

Among the results, CBD proved to be effective in reducing chronic pain in dogs with osteoarthritis, providing more mobility and quality of life. It also showed good results in controlling seizures resistant to medications and relieving itching caused by dermatitis, in addition to anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic properties observed in experimental studies.

Despite the advancements, the authors highlight that research on the veterinary use of cannabidiol is still scarce, especially due to legal restrictions that limit studies. Nevertheless, the existing data already point towards integrating CBD into conventional protocols, offering new possibilities for veterinary medicine and, above all, for animal well-being.
